Make Pull-Up Training Fun

One of the keys to sustaining a fitness program is to make it fun. If you enjoy and look forward to your workouts, then you are more likely to continue them. So make them fun. My favorite exercise is the pull-up, so here are some ideas for making pull-ups fun.

Grease the Groove
This is really popular on the internet, so you've probably heard about it. Instead of focusing your training to your workouts, put a bar in a doorway that you go through often and crank out half of your maximum reps every time you go through the doorway. It's fast, it's not too hard, and it builds volume. Whatever you do, don't go to failure (or even come close).

Towel Pull-ups
These will work your wrists and forearms like no other exercise and you'll prepare to climb ropes. Take two hand-towels (ask permission if you're taking your wife or Mom's), and hang them over the bar about shoulder width apart. Grab them tight, and do as many as you can-you can also grease the groove with these. Over time, you'll see your grip get stronger and it will make regular pull-ups easier since your grip won't give out.

Pull-Up Ladders
Replace your workout with pull-up ladders. Do one pull-up, rest, then do two, etc. until your form breaks down. Then descend back down the ladder. Challenge a friend to a ladder workout.

Challenge a Friend
Make it a race to 100 pull-ups or to see who can do the heaviest pull-up. Or try the crossfit-style 3 weighted, 5 dead hang, 7 kipping pull-up workout.
