News and Notes

  • I read about the new government nutrition guidelines yesterday. And while they probably aren't perfect, they are pretty good and a big improvement over the pyramid. It's a diagram of a plate, and it encourages making 1/2 the meal veggies and fruit, 1/4 of the meal protein, and 1/4 grains. I'm not so sure about the grain thing, but 1/4 won't hurt too much. It also encourages a cup of dairy with each meal. See more here.
  • My new hunger theory--about once a month I get ravenously hungry for a week. And I'm starting to suspect that it comes right after my easy week. During this hunger-week, I can't get enough food. I crave lots of really good food--veggies, fruit, protein, dairy.
  • I had some knee issues when doing squats a few weeks ago and couldn't figure out what was happening. Then I focused on knee rehab exercises and focused on perfect form. The pain went away with the focus on form. I guess I just got lazy. So if you're having issues with a joint that doesn't go away with rest, then check your form.
What do you think of the new guidelines? Have you noticed a similar issue with hunger? Or have you had a similar experience with a link between pain and form?
